New Protherm Medved floor standing cast iron gas boiler

New Protherm Medveď line of floor standing cast iron gas boilers. PROTHERM is bringing a new line of floor standing cast iron gas boilers to the market, the Medveď KLOM

Summer is slowly approaching, bringing with it ideal conditions for reconstructing heating systems, not only in new buildings, but mostly aging gas boilers, which in some cases have been working for decades. Most often the heat source is a floor standing gas boiler. The simplest replacement for such a boiler is another floor standing gas boiler, which requires only minimum modifications for replacement and brings a level of technology which corresponds to the current environmental protection requirements and saves on heating costs.
The Protherm brand, as part of Vaillant Group, has for many years offered lines of well-equipped floor standing cast iron boilers under the brand name Protherm Medveď. The group of floor standing cast iron boilers of up to 50 kW offers versions of boilers intended only for heating with the option of connecting an auxiliary, indirectly heated DHW tank (Medveď KLO) as well as boilers with an integrated 110 liter DHW tank (Medveď KLZ).

Protherm has also reacted to users' growing demand for a higher level of operating comfort and fuel economy and is offering a modernized line of the proven floor standing cast iron Medveď version 16 boilers, labeled KLOM. The innovations of the current model keep the excellent attributes of the previous models, among which are the long service life of a cast iron unit, high combustion efficiency, operating dependability and the universal deployment in heating systems regardless of the number of units or amount of water in the system.

Continuous output modulation
The main advantages of the Medveď KLOM boiler model is the continuous output modulation (regulation) in the range of 65 – 100% of the boiler's capacity, and the integrated equithermal regulation, which optimizes the boilers output according to its current needs in connection with the outdoor temperature. The continuous modulation adjusts the boiler's output to the immediate heating needs. Unlike with the previous models, the user does not need to operate the boiler by manually switching between full and reduced output depending on the season, which increases the operating convenience of the boiler and also saves fuel.

Equithermal regulation
Equithermal regulation is becoming the obvious standard for new construction, but is also simultaneously used in many installations within existing heating systems through various blending valves, which connected with the relevant control unit blend the returning water with the outgoing water. The built-in equithermal regulation in the Medveď boiler, when connected with the continuous modulation of the burner, ensures the desired temperature of heating water already as it exits the boiler, saving fuel and resulting in a high level of heating comfort. In case of a set of cascading boilers, the investments in the boiler room control system are lower, because continuous output modulation and equithermal regulation can be simpler. Setting the slope of the curve and its parallel shift is afforded by this regulation method.

Exhausting combustion gases - semi-turbo
Just like for the existing models, for the new floor standing KLOM boilers it is possible to use a blower to exhaust combustion gases, a so-called semi-turbo from Protherm's product line. Blower installation, by simply mounting it on the combustion gas flare and connecting it to the boiler control panel, may solve boiler installation in cases where it is not possible to exhaust combustion gases into a chimney flue.

Connecting the DHW tank
The KLOM boiler line is ready to be connected to any type of indirectly heated DHW tank. Unlike standard connections using one circulating pump and a three-way valve, as was used in the previous version of the boiler, the connection of the new version of the boiler to the tank is provided by a connection assembly containing an NTC sensor and a clamp. The hydraulic connection to the DHW tank occurs via an independent branch line which is equipped with a second circulating pump with a check valve. (The circulating pump is not part of boiler delivery).

Idea diagram for connecting the tank and Medveď boiler
Switching between heating and filling the tank is secured by electronic control of the simplest possible kind such that either the pump for the heating system or for filling the tank is operating.
This change guarantees operational reliability in problem-free switching between the two modes, secure circulation of hot water only between the boiler and tank in summer, but it is also advantageous for installation companies. To install the boiler and the tank it is not necessary to precisely specify a three-way valve with driving mechanism, rather an off-the-shelf circulating pump and check valve can be used. The pump is operated reliably and the less expensive item is also less prone to the influences of operating with contaminants than a three-way valve is. Minor contaminants in the heating water, which can flow through the pump long-term without affecting its function, may result in the poor functioning of the valve.

Conclusion
The modernized line of floor standing cast iron boilers Protherm Medveď KLOM provides the user with many advantages. For example:
they are very suitable for replacing solid-fuel-fired boilers or for working in combination with them
they can use a blower attachment instead of being exhausted to the chimney
the boiler's cast iron body guarantees long service life
continuous output control with equithermal regulation contributes to economical operation
Medveď KLOM boilers can be bought for a nice price
